Apologies to Phil Collins. And, it's not strictly speaking true, either. But ever since I serendipitously stumbled upon Beth's blog hop when I started blogging in May, I've been really looking forward to my day on the hop! It's been so fun to read everyone else's "Getting to Know You" tidbits (I am so nosy) and to discover a lot of other wonderful bloggers! Many thanks to Beth for getting the party started. Be sure to check out Patricia's blog today, and Martha's and Melissa's from earlier this week.
My name is Catherine (I show up as "Books_Bound" in your comment sections, so see, you've already hit some big paydirt by reading this) and I am a PhD student at Cornell University. I was born and raised in Nebraska, and I still consider it my "real" home. I grew up sewing (unwillingly--my mother is a Home Economics teacher and forced me to sew yearly projects for 4-H. "Forced" is exactly the right word, too) but didn't start quilting until this past January. I had created a list of "27 Things to do while 27" and one of them was "try quilting." So I did--I took an introductory class a a wonderful local store, and here I am! It's a wonderful diversion from school.
My projects thus far! I'm not prolific, but I hey, it's about the process, right?
I tend to love all of the projects I've done (vanity?), but so far, I've only kept a bag and a half-finished mini! I'm going to make a quilt for myself one of these days, I promise. I just think it's so fun to give stuff away, particularly if you've made it just for that person and according to their likes and personality. It might be my favorite part of quilting. My least favorite part is the cost. Boo. :(
"I'll take 'Potpourri' for $200, Alex"
Well, ok then.
Favorite game show: Surprise! It's Jeopardy. I even got to go to an audition last month! It was very fun, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make the cut. This year. Now that I've gone once, I'm bound and determined to get on there someday.
Life ambition: Marry well and buy all the fabric I want. And clothes. Wow, I love clothes.
Backup Plan: Teach college.
Backup Plan C: Be an extremely educated Starbucks barista.
Favorite sewing tip: Respect the rotary cutter.
What I'm doing in two weeks: Taking a rock climbing course.
Favorite sport to watch: College football (Go Nebraska Cornhuskers!) I love it. I like tennis too, but only if they aren't grunters. Which most are, so I like tennis on mute.
Coolest place I've been: China (2006) or Argentina (2004). I love traveling. I have an ideal schedule for it. But I have no money. Life is cruel.
Craziest thing I've learned since blogging: That Brits call throw pillows "cushions." It took me awhile to figure that one out.
Favorite thing about blogging: Honestly? I love looking at the stats page where it says from which country people are viewing your blog. Since I can't travel, I find it awesome that my blog is at least getting some play in Iceland, India, Japan, etc.
Most overused punctuation: Exclamation points. It's a sickness. I'm working on it.
That's probably enough, right? If you need more, check out my "About Me" section or my "Completed Projects" section! Thanks a lot for stopping by, and be sure to check out my very first tutorial for my Matt and Kim pillow!

Loved your post! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteCan I admit to the fact I didn't know there were different names for cushions? I just thought "throw pillows" was the fancypants interior designer term hehe!
Great post! Love to know more about the people behind the blogs. Did not know cushions were also throw pillows.. How funny!

ReplyDeleteI too am an overexclamation marker!! SO nice to hear more about you!
ReplyDeleteWow, you have done a lot as a new quilter. Cute projects.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch tennis anymore because of the grunts. I thought I was just me though.
Nice to know a little more about you from the blog hop. Already a follower!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a member of OEMUA-- Over-Exclamation-Mark-Users-Anonymous!!!! LOL!!! Enjoyed your post! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis really made me giggle! I also over use exclamation marks (which one of my 17 year old students thought were called "explanation marks" until Tuesday!)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed my visit today. Thanks for reminding me to respect the rotary cutter. My fingers have too...Also, I over used the exclamation mark. Guilty! You have been a busy bee, such lovely projects. Thanks for sharing today...Judith, Texas
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you, great post. I agree with you I don't like the cost of quilting...
ReplyDeleteI'll have to remember those FAQs for next time! And he doesn't ask much anymore but way back when (um, 6 months ago) when I started blogging, my husband used to like seeing the stats about the countries where visitors to my blog were from. He also auditioned for Jeopardy once. Oh, and I also have the !!! issue!
ReplyDeleteOh, I have an ! issue too. Especially when commenting on other peoples' posts, as it doesn't seem right to say "That is such a beautiful quilt." But then I find myself using two or three exclamation points, and that is too many.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Love this! And I to have an !!!! problem :)
ReplyDeleteI do not think that exclamation points are a problem! Ever! (Heehee!)
ReplyDeleteWoo! I'm glad to hear your a college football fan, and a Big 10 girl at that!
I loved reading your post, and I loved your pillow tute! So cute!
(That's seven exclamation points, FYI.)
Great post and of course I love you just a {little bit} LOT more since you are Husker fan - us Nebraska gals gotta stick together! and here is another one!! I have the same problem with them too! lol!
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog hop post!! You are a hoot! I really like your life's ambition - I think I will make it mine, too. Great pillow tutorial - I have got to make some pillows!! Don't worry about the !!!!!'s, I think they are a necessary part of blogging. Case in point -- I got some new fabric (boring) vs I got some new fabric!!!!!!!!! See the difference? At least you don't have a smiley face problem :)
ReplyDeleteOkay Catherine, I love Phil Collins. I also don't have any quilts that I made, I gave all of them away :)Fabrics do cost a lot, so I try to buy them when they're on sale. Because of this I never buy whole collections :)Good luck with the marry well thing! :)) Be sure to have a very strong plan B, C, maybe D :)
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post, very nice to meet you!
Really, you think us calling cushions "cushions" is strange?? I think it's strange that you Americans use the same word for a thing you put your head on in bed as the thing you sit on on the sofa! ;0) The more you read blogs the more of these strange differences you'll find. The projects you've done are beautiful. I love that quilt in the bottom right hand corner (is it called garden fence?), it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you on the Hop! I like your mosaic - your blues and greens quilt is lovely. Thanks for the tutorial too!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you, I like your ambitions to marry well AND buy all the fabric you want :)
ReplyDeleteCatherine, it's so great to learn more about you! Good to see you've got a plan -- and backup plans too! :) I think I fall in love with every project I make too, but you're right -- it's so fun to share them with others.
ReplyDeleteI was a PhD student once. But then I decided that having a PhD meant that I was destined for a career that involved research in some capacity. I loved the teaching component, and even the field work component but the statistical analysis and the experimental design components were just too solitary for little ol'. Which makes it really weird that I enjoy quilting and sewing so much, since I do those by myself. I think it's the "show and tell" aspect of the online community that keeps it fun for me!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you and love your quilting, Good for your mom.. I wanted to share this link with you that I know you will enjoy, you might have seen it, its a hop I am in right now but its from around the world.. http://www.quokkaquilts.blogspot.com.au/p/the-travelling-picstitch-bloghop.html.. check it out and enjoy
